And standing here, now, or maybe long before this moment,
is my head caught betwen my hands.
Let me see this world within worlds.
Let me kick my feet into the air
and float,
briefly, upon this hollow wind,
and catch
the end of this blood moon.
How we observe the world is as much a universal experience as it is a personal one.
Like scientific research, when we listen to the world around us, we’re filtering through data to find something significant in what we hear. Even if you and I hear the same sound, we may filter it differently and associate it with completely different things. I find this magical. Hildegard Westerkamp, a pioneer of soundwalks, described this as the blend between our acoustic environment and inner sound world. Maybe if we could hear this blend through each others’ ears, we could understand each other better. Sound can allow us to really focus on the environment and the people around us. How are we perceiving it differently, or the same?
What can we learn from each other when we share our inner sonic worlds?
