Sonic Geographies is a course from the Department of Geography at UC Berkeley. It is designed and taught by Joel Wanek. Our work has been generously supported by the Berkeley Collegium Grant Program.&nbsp;

The aim of the course is to investigate how audio recording and walking can be used as methodologies for exploring our environment and the people that shape it. Students make field recordings and conduct interviews as they move through public spaces of the city. They then edit and structure their sound recordings to express their understandings, feelings, and experiences of that place.&nbsp;For the past two iterations of the class, our walks have been guided by creeks througout the Bay Area. Like many dense urban areas, creeks here have largely been routed underground through cement culverts. However, there are still areas where the creek can be accessed above ground. We let the creek guide us, above ground and below, and tune into the sonic shifts as we follow. Many other aspects of these areas are revealed too - socio-economic dynamics, watershed health, social infrastructure, nature accessibility, etc.&nbsp;
The edited sonic works that students create range from chronologically-structured pieces which create a sort-of condensed sonic map of our journeys to more free-form, poetic explorations of place.
Check out some of our special releases at sonicgeographies.bandcamp.com.&nbsp;

Hi Everyone! My name is Saraí. I'm from the Blossom Valley Neighborhood in San Jose, where pre-existing sounds are usually airplanes arriving at the airport or the nearby highway. This is my collection of sounds that sonically encapsulate the different neighborhoods around the Bay. I tune in to the pre-existing sounds and learn what makes them exist. I invite you to listen to these, along with me, and envision each place as a sound landscape.

Refugio Creek refugeThe first time that I fully immersed myself in a sonic walk. During the long bus ride to Hercules, I prepared myself for the new environment I was about to enter. I consciously set aside my previous association with the Hercules-tied family and approached the space with fresh eyes. Throughout this soundwalk, I found myself searching for a refuge amongst the surrounding sounds of Refugio Creek.
Refugio Creek is exactly what it means: a refuge.&nbsp;
Who finds refuge within the suburbs? Who gets lost and can find a shelter?

︎ thriving &nbsp;Inhabitants of Strawberry CreekI interviewed an inhabitant who frequents the environment built around Strawberry Creek, near Doe Library at UC Berkeley -- a space shaped by infrastructure built around the extraction of natural resources. As I moved through the space, I came across a student taking a study break outside of Doe Library, a moment that reflected how necessary nature can be to sustaining oneself in academic spaces.&nbsp;
Feeling lost is an important step to thriving.

How can space avoid extraction? Is belonging needed to thrive in academia?&nbsp;

Sausal Creek oasis
Stepping on the Dimond District, I was surrounded by a booming business, not knowing where to explore by the many options that the Dimond District had. I spent most of my time at Dimond Park -- which I have never seen a more lively park during a technology boom era at 1pm on a Friday. I talked to two folks who frequent the Dimond Park often and both helped me understand the oasis that this park brings.&nbsp;
The community is committed to keep the creek restored.

How can an oasis bring gather people? How can restoration last decades?

Using creeks as a navigation source to walk my way through the environment and understanding what makes these environments. The weekly walks focused on learning about the environment. Through these places, I stop at those I think are important in shaping the environment; often, these stopping points become the center of my sonic work. These environments are quite different, especially in the understanding of why certain spots are quiet, and the lack of access to silence.

︎
hidden San Lorenzo CreekI remember San Lorenzo as a place of joy and tranquility, hidden by the businesses of downtown. Throughout this sonicwalk, I encountered many environments that were not what I expected such as a three generation passed down boot store, a lively senior community center, or a calming japanese garden.San Lorenzo Creek: a hidden treasureWhat stories emerge from the hidden spaces? How does music build?

Alameda Creek antique
Walking through Niles, I felt like I had stepped into another time. The town carried a quiet, Southwestern character with old railway tracks and antique storefronts that seemed frozen in place. It felt less like a neighborhood and more like a set from a Western film, where history still lingers in the streets. The creek became a character in this film setting. However the heavy contrast of a modern coffee shop just a few steps away, interrupted the past with a different rhythm of life. Niles: a layered space of antique and modern

How can a place feel old and new simulatneously? Does historic preservation matter?

connecting Coyote HillsArriving at the Coyote Hills Slough, I didn’t expect the richness of sound that would surround me. The stillness in space suddenly felt alive. The air was stacked with bird calls, wind, and even slithers of snakes. Looking across the water toward the other side of the Bay, it felt like it was a distant yet connected landscape. I only wish that kind of place was more accessible, so&nbsp; people can directly&nbsp; get to this kind of quiet haven.
Coyote Hills: where water meets the land

How can a still place create sound? How can communities access nature?

︎Special Thanks︎ A big part of my work comes from inspiration drawn from my classmates, whether through conversations about their personal methodologies or time spent together at lunch, even in the journey of getting there. Truly, these six sonic walks would not have been as meaningful without their presence, feedback, and shared creative energy. Every Bird Ever is here,&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;flapping in the water,
hiding in the cattails,

of sound,
point the shotgun mic any which way,
and you can hear: a goose fight,
dozens of goldfinches crowded on a branch,
ducks lamenting the ruckus,
turkeys patrolling the perimeter,
gulls lost at land,
falcons on the hunt. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Drag yourself up&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;the hills and be swallowed by wind

I am orginally from the Bay Area, but taking this class helped me explore parts of the Bay Area that I had not previously explored. Additonally, taking this class taught me all of the different ways to listen to all of the different sounds around me because prior to taking this class I did not know how to listen to and record all of these different sounds. I recorded nine sound pieces throughout the course of the semester that are on this page for everybody to listen to.

Coyote Hills<img width="1920" height="1228" width_o="1920" height_o="1228" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/b9dee183aa3eea3bdddf6dbdc00b66e3165dc6668287dbbfd3780ef7c5d8a418/Coyote-Hills.jpg" data-mid="233155378" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/b9dee183aa3eea3bdddf6dbdc00b66e3165dc6668287dbbfd3780ef7c5d8a418/Coyote-Hills.jpg" />
I hope you enjoy listening to each and every one of my soundwalks as I put a lot of time and effort into making them. Walking along different creeks throughout the Bay Area while tuning into all of the sonic characteristics around me has revealed to me that if I slow down, pay attention, and listen to all of the sounds around me for me to hear regardless of where I go. There are lots of sounds for me to listen to regardless of where I go. For example, more affluent areas are peaceful and quiet because more neighborhoods are built away from busy streets and freeways where cars are constantly passing by.

Alameda Creek<img width="1482" height="1198" width_o="1482" height_o="1198" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/d69347fd129e60d8b6aecf33ef3a67e5407c35d69ec8154925d2011ac763a76b/Alameda_Creek_Watershed.jpg" data-mid="233104683" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/d69347fd129e60d8b6aecf33ef3a67e5407c35d69ec8154925d2011ac763a76b/Alameda_Creek_Watershed.jpg" />
But, less affluent areas are noisy and chaotic because more neighborhoods are built next to busy streets and freeways where traffic is constantly moving. In addition, less populated areas are more likely to have creeks and trees because people will do whatever it takes to preserve the environment so that the natural beauty in these areas can be enjoyed for future generations. But, more populated areas are more likely to have houses and roads because people would like to get from point A to point B without having to cross multiple creeks in certain places.

San Lorenzo Creek<img width="1140" height="566" width_o="1140" height_o="566" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/d0d417ebf8c554a5859da277c972fb5fd5a4206479e89d5e761901b21b7e681d/San-Lorenzo-Creek.jpg" data-mid="233102717" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/d0d417ebf8c554a5859da277c972fb5fd5a4206479e89d5e761901b21b7e681d/San-Lorenzo-Creek.jpg" />

These methodologies prove to me that other geographers and other researchers should slow down, pay attention, and listen to all of the sounds around them regardless of where they are. Over the course of the semester I have used my sound recorder by keeping most of my recordings the same length so that I do not have long sound recordings to listen to when I make my sound clips. Now, I use my sound recorder by limiting the number of recordings I make throughout the day so that I do not have to decide what sounds to keep and what sounds to get rid of in case I end up with two clips that sound similar right next to each other.

Wildcat Creek<img width="1000" height="417" width_o="1000" height_o="417" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/23dc50d6562b26caf1e1f65a5d08befeed28b35dde3c034f624bb5549109d437/Wildcat-Creek.png" data-mid="231896703" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/23dc50d6562b26caf1e1f65a5d08befeed28b35dde3c034f624bb5549109d437/Wildcat-Creek.png" />

But, over the course of semester I have edited my sonic works by going from making slow transitions while letting one sound slowly finish out and then letting the next sound slowly ramp up. Now, I edit my sonic works by cutting from the peak of one sound to the peak of the next sound because I want my sound pieces to flow from one sound to the next sound. I have gone from learning how to make slow transitions to learning how to make quick transitions by learning how to listen to when two sounds peak.

Pinole Creek<img width="1200" height="924" width_o="1200" height_o="924" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/a5ce74652944c4f0b92511c3020e3e51091399ff0203dba77f9c4707ffc5a3e2/SFOTB.TrailGuide.Northshore.2020.map_.jpg" data-mid="233155629" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/a5ce74652944c4f0b92511c3020e3e51091399ff0203dba77f9c4707ffc5a3e2/SFOTB.TrailGuide.Northshore.2020.map_.jpg" />My guiding inspiration for me this semester has been to find faster ways to upload my sound clips onto my computer, make my sound clips, and then edit my sound clips into one sound piece so I can work more efficiently. My edited sonic works express every adventure that I went on in all of the places that I walked through over the course of the semester because in all of my sound pieces I take people on all of my adventures through every soundwalk that they listen to. In addition, through all of my soundwalks I intended to communicate my experience on all of my adventures by intentionally arranging all of my sound clips in all of my sound pieces in the order that I made all of my sound recordings.
Bushy Dell Creek<img width="1200" height="550" width_o="1200" height_o="550" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/eaca1c154649e9634e91028f19d2fbab8bd139eac0d3bea6a5b24bad4f4b685b/ramble4-roadmap.png" data-mid="231896707" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/eaca1c154649e9634e91028f19d2fbab8bd139eac0d3bea6a5b24bad4f4b685b/ramble4-roadmap.png" />

For example, all of my soundwalks communicate to everybody who will listen to all of my soundwalks that some places in the Bay Area have not been altered by urbanization while other places in the Bay Area have been heavily altered by urbanization. In addition, all of my soundwalks communicate to everybody who will listen to each of my soundwalks that I like when everything including my soundwalks are consistent and orderly. Now, I hope that everybody who will listen to all of my soundwalks will get to experience the adventures that I went on by listening to each of my soundwalks because all of my sound clips in all of my sound pieces are intentionally arranged in the order that I made all of my sound recordings.

This semester I went from not knowing how to record and edit my soundwalks to becoming a professional sound recorder and editor. I would like to thank my instructor Joel Wanek for teaching me how to record and edit all of my soundwalks this semester. Thank you to everybody who listened to all of my soundwalks. I hope you all enjoyed listening to all of my soundwalks as I put a lot of time and effort into making each and every one of my soundwalks this semester.

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Although all creeks are under the name of ‘creek’, different parts of the Bay area reveal very diverse creeks, and within each route of the creek, every part are very different as well. Even two sides of the creek can be two worlds, and this complexity of the construction of the Bay area is something that cannot be fully examined if not via the methodology of walking along the creek and along different sections of the creek. Through sonically approaching the lands, the soundscape that embeds urban constructions and natural landscapes may demonstrate this juxtaposition of the two, but it is also possible that the two form a new narrative. Sonically, this region is a merge of natural lands and urban constructions, and although it has already been conceptually comprehended as an issue existing for this decade, the sharpness of sonic geography approaches is that it is capturing this juxtaposition constantly, within every single second of the recording and within every section of the recording. The juxtaposition that exists in this region of the Bay area is emergent and present, and that is how sonic approaches can be critical and immediate in revealing such circumstances.

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Tuning into the places, one is capturing the reality of the place, including the traces of the lives that are tightly linked as a unity in that place. Through meeting the people that reside in the area, one is viscerally experiencing, as well as comprehending the components that construct the moments of another being. The history of Pinole creek, if not through the interview of the elder person who witnessed and participated in the history, will never touch me so authentically when seeing the archaeological items in that area. Without the words, the sentiments, the memories and the participation that are so vivid through the person who witnessed and experienced the history of the area, sole items left from the history are not propelling testimonies of the past. Witnessing and experiencing all small segments that compose the history and leading to the present moments of the area is something that matters for geographers to truly comprehend the reality of the region, instead of abstracting the history into items, letters and facts. To tune into the place is to witness the liveliness, the texture, the voices of the places, and that is what gives power to the beings of that region.

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; If conventional geography attempts to abstract and comprehend the places as if solving problems, the more subjective approach adopted through sonic geography is the artistic quality of providing miscellaneous perspectives and subjective voices to represent the areas. It is not facts that sonic geography is pursuing, but art that does not require judgements of the correctness of voices, and that is how the most authentic moments can be recorded from the area. It is not only the history of city construction, archaeological sites that matters, but the crying and laughter of infants, the sound artist that records the voices of the Bay, the tones of a hippy guitarist, or a queek from a falcon, that incorporates the reality of the places.&nbsp; They provide a continual and ongoing process of comprehending the realities of other persons, beings, places and voices, and this part of the places is neglected and ignored by the researchers. What sonic geography presents is the reality of the places that cannot be merely abstracted into statistics, letters or language, and it presents something subtle and formless that cannot be captured by the forms and concepts that conventional researchers adopt.

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;At first, in my process of sound recording, I attempted to separate sounds that are merged together and feature one sound in particular. As I felt too many sounds at once may be too distracting, my deliberate attempt of capturing individual sounds is aligned with the editing process of presenting one sound at a time and gradually transitioning into another sound with the use of crossfading in editing. This presents a slow pace, and almost microscopic regarding the quality of segregating sounds and highlighting very subtle sounds, and the overall quality of the sound walk is smooth and gentle.

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; I then started to explore the stereo quality of the recorder, and when I record, I move from one spot to another smoothly. Especially with the recording of the hippy guitarist during the Pinole sound walk, the sounds of the guitar and the vocal part of the guitarist is very close to the recorder at a time, and then very far and from a higher position, then it transits into a sound from a low position and slowly amplifying. Playing around with the distance of which I record the source of sound, the sounds are sometimes more prominent from the left ear side, and sometimes from a lower angle. This method of exploring the stereo quality of the sounds presents more lively and vivid sounds, as well as generating more possibilities in capturing the texture of sounds. During this time period, my editing is introduced with the hardcut technique, blending with crossfades. As the sounds are developed, via the process of recording, to display more facets and attributes of sounds, the technique of hard cuts in editing brings about an interactive relation amidst sounds, such as that between the hitting sound of a tennis ball and that of a road construction, and between a rhythm of the windmill and a buzzing sound of the bees. All sounds, regardless of the spatial and temporal attributes of which they were, blend into a unity that embeds miscellaneous facets and textures of the beings that are present in that region.

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;
During the last sound walks, I was using different types of recorders while recording, such as the shotgun recorder, and attempting to explore how different types of recorders may display different qualities of sounds. With one of the recorders that has two sets of ball-shaped microphone, I was able to capture the texture of the field of straw, its moving direction against and along the wind, and its tingling sounds when footsteps are on top of it, as well as its sounds when the microphones rub on it. All of which provides a very subtle texture of the straw that creates a sense of synesthesia when I was listening to them. How sounds are not mere audible information, but can also be tactile, becomes my emphasis for sound recording in the last few sound walks.&nbsp; How sounds extend beyond sounds, and how the formless wind, that is out of reach through visible presentation, can be expressed through sound recording, is something that I began to feature on during that time. Along with this idea, I was experimenting with the sound collage during my editing process. As a continuation of the inspiration of synesthesia, the collage of multiple sounds create new sounds that are no longer sounds but different kinds of tactile textures. The barking sound of hounds are layered with the buzzing sounds of the Bart, while the radio audios from far away are layered upon the sounds of the creek. Sound collages open up a possibility of enriching and complementing different sounds and transforming them into miscellaneous textures.

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; One inspiration that prompts my sound editing process is the Chinese constellation map. How sound walks are not merely presented via typical geographical maps, but may be points of the places that form constellations of different patterns, how sound walks are not restricted to itself but can be linked into one unity of a visible pattern, how sound walks echo with another, resonate and form new narratives that are beyond confinement of spatial and temporal relationships, is an inspiration that influences my editing and recording process. The recording of the sounds of bees from a truck echoed with the recording of bees from the wildcat creek park, the electric music from a shop echoed with the pop music played from a speaker in the historical park in Pinole. All of which are not only sounds restricted to one sound walk, but universal sounds that resonate and transform into different characteristics every time when I am encountering it. This inspiration also helps when a sense of boredom arises when continually capturing similar sounds of the creek, since the resonation of different creeks forms a collective narrative of creeks.

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; I hope to communicate, via my works, that there is no noise, no good or bad sounds, no sounds that are dominant or subsidiary, no sounds that weigh more than other sounds, and all sounds coexist in these complex and varied regions where natural landscapes and urban constructions are both present. Through the coexistence of the multitude of miscellaneous sounds, I intend to express the various narratives and textures that are embedded in different sounds, and how they can be merged into a unity through the experience of the geography of these regions sonically. The Bay area, with highly different landscapes in different parts of it, is most typical in its diversity of narratives, and through the merge of different creeks that finally enter the unity of the ocean, the narratives and sounds also transform into a unity. How the sense of synesthesia became my inspiration is also included in my hope of expressing the break of boundaries as something essential. Breaking the boundaries between tactile and sonic experiences, breaking the boundaries between different sound walks , breaking the boundaries between different narratives and breaking the boundaries between different sounds, so that the various narratives, sounds, senses and experiences resonate with one another,&nbsp; that continuously and constantly echo the possibilities of blending, merging and transforming. This transformation from a variety of individual sounds to a unity of sounds, the metamorphosis from separate memories, voices and narratives to a unity, is something that I hope the listeners feel and perceive from listening to my sound walks.&nbsp;
&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; As an international student, the collision amidst the oriental narrative and the occidental narrative was prominent in my perception of the regions, how they contrast result in hugely different understandings regarding the memories and history of the regions. As I experience this huge gap between different narratives, I also perceive that the narratives are not in constant juxtaposition, within sonic experiences they can merge into a unity, as the boundary of language and ideology melt. That is something about myself that is tightly linked to the ‘breaking of boundaries’ of which I intend the listeners may perceive.

Through these recordings, I invite you to experience the San Francisco I see and hear — to feel how the sound of water shapes its surrounding space, reflects layers of history, and reveals the changing social and cultural landscapes along each creek.

Strawberry Creek begins quietly in the hills east of campus, flowing gently through the university grounds where it provides a peaceful green space for students to study, relax, and gather. As it continues westward, the creek gradually disappears beneath the dense infrastructure of downtown — buried under busy traffic and concrete. Yet, in some residential backyards and small urban parks preserved by environmentalists and local residents, the creek resurfaces, revealing moments of nature hidden within the city.This recording ends at Strawberry Creek Park, which once was the site of factories and a train station, now transformed into a local park with cafés, sports fields, and gathering spaces. Here, people of all ages coexist harmoniously: children play, adults sip coffee, teens shoot hoops, and families picnic. The creek quietly weaves through the park, gently separating these different scenes, allowing each group to enjoy this oasis of calm in their own way.

This creek winds through one of Berkeley’s more affluent neighborhoods, where the natural landscape is well preserved and includes features like small waterfalls. The walk begins among quiet streets lined with single-family homes, then leads into a lively market area filled with unique shops and a slower-paced, neighborhood feel. As the route continues, it crosses the BART tracks and enters the UC Village area, where the surroundings begin to feel less orderly. Parts of the lower creek are enclosed by fencing and barbed wire, marking a clear shift in how public space and natural features are maintained. This contrast offers a glimpse into how urban creeks reflect broader patterns of planning, care, and access across different parts of the city.

This journey begins in the eastern hills of Oakland, where a large park offers a variety of well-maintained facilities, including tennis courts, a Japanese garden, an artificial waterfall, and baseball fields. As I walked, I heard the steady hum of lawnmowers and the gentle ringing of wind chimes outside hillside homes. Moving downhill, the scenery gradually shifts into the denser, livelier atmosphere of downtown Oakland.
The creek eventually flows into Lake Merritt, a former wetland that has been reshaped into an artificial lake. Despite maintenance efforts, traces of pollution and litter are still present, reflecting the environmental challenges of the city. Around the lake, people gather to barbecue, relax, and enjoy their weekends, creating a vibrant and welcoming space. This soundwalk helped me see a different side of Oakland, one shaped by community life, everyday joy, and the complex layers of an evolving urban environment.

This is the northernmost creek in my series, flowing through a part of the Bay Area that developed later and at a slower pace compared to other regions. The area remains one of the more affordable places for many immigrant families to purchase housing. Walking along the creek, the sounds of industry become more prominent, and the cultural atmosphere grows more diverse. This is a small city shaped in part by spillover from nearby San Pablo.
The creek eventually extends into the bay. Toward the end of the walk, I sat on a bench near the shoreline after speaking with a few local couples who shared stories and knowledge about the area's history. From that spot, I listened to the gentle sounds of the bay mingling with the low hum of a nearby wastewater treatment facility. A squirrel emerged through a gap in the wooden planks in front of me, searching curiously for food. It was a quiet, grounded moment at the edge of land and sea.

This soundwalk begins on one of the Bay Area’s well-known hiking trails, where I experimented with two different microphones for the first time: a contact microphone and a shotgun microphone. The contact mic allowed me to capture underwater sounds from the creek, while the shotgun mic highlighted the rich layers of birdsong throughout the park. It opened up a new world of recording and offered some fascinating audio textures.
Continuing westward, I crossed a busy pedestrian bridge that spans the highway. On the other side, I entered an area with casinos and shopping centers, where the atmosphere shifted noticeably. In the recordings, the presence of Latinx music becomes stronger, adding new rhythms and voices to the evolving soundscape.

This small city is often seen as a stopover or a place people pass through during their travels. But this soundwalk gave me a much deeper and more vivid impression of it. We arrived during cherry blossom season, when the streets were bright with color. Murals throughout the city showcased its unique character, and many old shops and alleyways still carried traces of the streetscape before redevelopment.
Asian cultural elements stood out along the walk. I had a brief and warm exchange with an elderly Japanese woman in a park that was built on the former site of the city’s old library. She was curious about my recording equipment. Farther upstream, I followed the creek to a Japanese cultural center and garden, where the presence of heritage and community was clear. This walk revealed the layered, unexpected richness of a city that often goes unnoticed.

We traveled to Coyote Hills by chartered van for an unforgettable field trip. The audio begins in the wetlands below, where I witnessed geese fighting, birds singing in chorus, and wandered through dry reed fields. Then the trip began to rise into the hills.
At the top, I used a parabolic microphone and was lucky enough to capture the call of a hawk patrolling the valley below. Standing against the wind on the summit, I looked out over the distant view of the bay. The sound of wind brushing through waves of grass and blooming wildflowers at my feet created a soothing, wave-like rhythm. It became a moment of healing and quiet reflection, where sound, landscape, and stillness came together.︎Lobos Creek, San Francisco

We began this soundwalk by getting off the 38 bus, recording along a stretch of Chinatown filled with Hong Kong-style streetscapes. The journey continued through a San Francisco nature preserve and eventually led us to where the creek meets the ocean, right beneath the iconic Golden Gate Bridge.
The audio starts in a market area centered around restaurants and fresh food vendors, capturing the rhythms of daily life. As we moved on, the environment shifted into a space shared by insects and birds, following the creek’s path as it flows toward the sea. Listening to the crashing waves while looking at the Golden Gate Bridge, The layers of the Bay Area come together with the guitar, places I had visited before, moments captured in earlier recordings, and the mix of cultures and styles we passed along the way.
